January 2019 Medical Update

My appointment with the endocrinologist in Omaha, Nebraska was very informative. Unfortunately, my thyroid numbers are too high despite being on medication to combat it. Because of this, we have decided to go forward with a thyroid ablation.

I have a thyroid uptake test scheduled for January 29th and 30th. This test will determine the dosage used for the ablation. The ablation is scheduled for February 8th. A thyroid ablation is a procedure done to decrease the function of the thyroid gland. It is done by taking a medicine called radioactive iodine. I will follow a very strict protocol in order to keep myself and others safe around me after the ablation because I will be radioactive. I am, however, hoping this radioactivity will bring me superhero powers. 🙂

The difficulty after the ablation will be managing hormone levels as the thyroid dies. I will be doing blood work every two weeks to monitor these levels closely in order to make the best medication decisions. It can take anywhere from six months to a whole year to stabilize the hormone levels following the ablation.

Things are in the works to head to Boston in March to see Dr. Castells at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Castells specializes in Mast Cell Disorders. We’re excited to meet with her to see if she has any additional ideas to help me better manage my Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.

I am excited to go but nervous for the actual process of traveling. It will be my first time flying with all of my shots and medication. Being confined in the plane and staying in a hotel makes me extremely uneasy because I can’t control those environments. I know the trip will be physically draining and reaction stimulating but I know it’s important for me to keep searching for the best way to manage my conditions.

I am really grateful to get to see the doctor in Boston. I’ve been waiting over a year for this appointment. ❤️ I’d love to have a phone call while I’m doing the super hero transformation. I think being lonely will be my biggest challenge.

Oh! Flying powers would be amazing! 😊 Unfortunately, Ranger will be staying home with Felix for this trip. My mom is going to be taking me to Boston. Thank you for your care and support and for ALL the love!
