December 2018 Medical Update

This past fall, my health has been a roller coaster of uncertainties. I was officially diagnosed with Graves’ Disease in October by my endocrinologist in Omaha. In addition to my daily reactions from Mast Cell and Carcinoid Syndrome, my thyroid numbers were very severe and I was extremely symptomatic from the Graves’ disease. Although I was glad to have the diagnosis confirmed, it has led to ongoing difficulties with treatments. With my sensitivities to medication, it has been hard to get my thyroid numbers stabilized with a medication I can actually tolerate. With the current medication I am on, I still have some intolerances, but the reactions have been manageable for the time being. A thyroid ablation is on the horizon if the reactions to my medication start to increase, otherwise, we will do it when my thyroid begins to burn out. Even with doing an ablation, there is much uncertainty with how I will do with the actual process as well as concern with how my body will adjust to the hormone replacement therapy afterward. At the beginning of January, I will be heading to Omaha again to meet with my endocrinologist to discuss my thyroid numbers, medication, and ablation.

While dealing with all of the thyroid issues I also developed a harmful bacteria overgrowth in my gut. Treatment for this proved difficult as well as I had an anaphylactic reaction to the first set of antibiotics. The second set was more tolerable and I finally got through a complete ten-day script a few weeks ago. Things are currently looking better on this front, but I will be retesting this week to confirm that the overgrowth has completely cleared up.

Additionally, I still deal with daily reactions from the mast cell disease and the carcinoid syndrome. The octreotide shots continue to be a blessing and bring me some relief. My primary doctor is amazing and I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful person looking out after me.

I will try to provide updates more consistently. The past several months were so inconsistent and turbulent that I found it hard to write an update. Things just couldn’t seem to get stabilized for any period of time so that I could write about it. Thanks again for all of your continued love and support. It means so much to me.
