Laura Heyd has been suffering from debilitating and declining health since 2013 and has had many medical concerns leading up to this point. Many of you know her as a friend or former teacher. You may see her and outwardly she will smile and look fine at first glance. In actuality, she is suffering on a battlefield of severe reactions and eating is a constant struggle.
She currently has several diagnoses, which include Carcinoid syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Disorder, and Graves’ disease. Her quest for medical answers has taken her to Rocky Mountain Cancer Center (Denver, CO), Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), Riordan Clinic (Wichita, KS), KU Medical Center (Kansas City, MO), and multiple allergists, immunologists and rheumatoid specialists. Laura has an attentive and caring primary care physician in Manhattan, Kan. who has worked tirelessly to help Laura find answers and relief from her life-altering and extensive symptoms. On a daily basis, she suffers from nausea, vomiting, body swelling, facial edema, wheezing/difficulty breathing, extreme body pain, fatigue, etc.
Laura reacts severely to triggers in her environment that include temperature changes, physical movement, foods and beverages, medicines, natural odors, chemical odors, perfumes and scents, clothing materials, and sunlight. She contains her reactions to being handled at home as best she can. However, some things are out of her control, for example, in order to be out in public, she wears a mask to help block triggers, yet still gets sick from running basic errands. Laura is an outgoing and active person and these changes have caused her to live a newly isolated lifestyle.
Keep moving forward, because forward is the future.
