Surgery Update January 15, 2020

Thank you so much for your prayers. Laura’s surgery itself went well. Her surgery team was excellent and took many precautionary measures to try to keep her as stable as possible. Upon waking up from surgery she went into a highly reactive state and the doctors chose to keep her overnight to monitor her and provide medications and support. Additionally, she reacted to the pain medications so she is only able to use Ibuprofen to try to control her pain. Her blood pressure dropped extremely low during the night which kept everyone on their toes. The day after surgery she was a little more stable and they discharged her from the hospital in the late afternoon.
The first night home was extremely difficult. She is having excessive swelling and pain throughout her entire body. We ended up calling the nurse who worked with Laura during her recovery stay in the hospital since she was familiar with her unusual case. She had us elevate her legs and take Prednisone, Benadryl, and Ibuprofen every four hours throughout the night. She instructed us to go to the emergency room if her breathing became labored. Luckily, her breathing remained stable. It has been a really tough night for her. She seems to have a long road ahead of her for recovery but she is remaining strong and in high spirits.

Before Surgery: You can see she is already a bit reactive.

After Surgery: You can see how swollen Laura’s face is but she remains strong.
